My 1st Newsletter!

Greetings family & friends!!!

What a crazy, hectic time it has been since I got here! Don't get me wrong, I love(d) EVERY minute of it!!!!!

Let's start from my flight from Johannesburg to London…

As you all know how much I love watching movies, I had a fabulous time of watching movies on the flight. I only watched movies that seemed really interesting to me that I haven't seen before!!! That was cool.

I arrived in London, had to stand in a huge queue and wait to go through passport control. Thanks to Mercy Ships I had all my documentation ready to go through.

I then checked my next ticket to see where to go. I had to go from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 (quite a distance). After that, I had quite a time with getting my luggage checked in and everything (the people weren't too helpful there, oh well)!!! I won't get into details here (otherwise you might be reading for days)!

Our flight was delayed, because the crew didn't have transport and had to wait 35 minutes before they could get to us. At least the flight was shorter than anticipated.

3 people came to fetch me at the airport. They immediately took me to the house I am staying in. I got to meet lots and lots of people since I've been here.

At work, Kevin (my boss) taught me a lot of stuff (a program I have never worked with before, but am getting the hang of it – quite easy once you know it)… He had only 3 days to teach me what was really important, because he went to USA for 3 – 4 weeks! At least I am in correspondence with him while he is away…

Work has been going really well, as well as my private life! I absolutely love it here!!! The people are great, the place is nice. It's all good!!!

I had a tour of the ship! This ship is HUGE! Bigger than the Anastasis they say. There's a lot of work on the ship still to be done, but quite a lot has also been accomplished.

It's been quite cold here; though I do have some warm stuff that really helps (thanks Lisi!!!!!!!)!

We go out to explore the country in different groups at different times and places. So, we went to Hadrian's Wall. You can read more about its history at
http://www.aboutscotland.com/hadrian/index.html . One VERY interesting fact about it though (to me at least) is that they shot a scene from 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' there. The scene is near the beginning of the movie, where they just got back to England. There's a little boy running from soldiers and climbing into the tree. Robin Hood (Kevin Costner) fights the soldiers, etc. We also went to Hexam (on our way back) and toured Hexam Abbey.

Then, Easter Weekend, we went to Holy Island (read more on
http://www.lindisfarne.org.uk/ ) on Friday. We did the pilgrim's walk. This is basically on the sand, very slippery, cold (if you dare to go barefoot) and far. We had lots of fun doing it. People kept slipping and sliding and everyone was laughing (even the ones slipping & sliding). Luckily I didn't fall at all!!!

Saturday we went to Durham (about 15 minutes train ride from Newcastle). There we visited the Cathedral (where they shot some scenes from the Harry Potter movies). There is a tower in the Cathedral with 365 spiral steps (one for each year) that I went up and took photos from the top! That was high!!!

Sunday, after church we went to the beach, had a long walk and the evening some of us went for a long walk in the park. I had bundles of energy on Sunday that I still am not sure where it came from – might be the new surrounding and lots of fresh air I am getting!

Monday a couple of us went to York (
http://www.york-tourism.co.uk/ ). That's a town / city to the south of Newcastle. We basically went into the Minster's crypt and thereafter walked through "The Shambles", which basically is a lot of shops in streets where only pedestrians can go.

So, as you can see, I am taking every opportunity to explore the country side (as cost effective as possible).

Thank you for visiting my blog (website)! Comments are welcome!!!

Please e-mail me with updates of your lives!!! I am missing all of you!

All in all, don't worry about me. I am very happy!!!

Lots and lots and lots of love

Mathilda
